One last question folks. What does the script w on the front of my 1939 Mauser made Luger signify? I found it on the suffix chart, but I don't know what it means.

If it is under the serial number on the front of the frame, it is the letter suffix to the serial number and as such is a part of the full serial number. The 1939 Mausers went into the z suffix block.

It means that there were multiple Lugers produced in 1939
 

with the same numerical serial number as your, nd yours was produced in the "w" production run...


You should make sure that this "w" is recorded on any official paperwork related to this pistol as part of the serial number.


Paperwork like Insurance records, firearms registrations (if you need them in your state) and estate inventories...


That "w" distinguishes your Luger from the others that are stamped with the same numerical serial number...

The Germans made 10,000 lugers and then changed suffix letters. Such as 10,000 a , 10,000 b etc. On and on. Some runs went the distance others only went so far...a study in itself. Jerry Burney

I have a 1940 Code 42 with a serial number 14xxe, and the local sheriff contacted me about a stolen Luger with a serial number 14xx. It took some time and research to convince him that the fact that the stolen pistol did not have the "e" suffix meant that my Luger was not the one that had been stolen. It is extremely important to include the letter suffix on any records that you may have on your own pistols.

You also need to record the year of production along with the serial number and suffix as the serial number and suffix have been repeated in 40 years of manufacture. Then you have the P38's that were serial numbered the same way.

How did the Sheriff's office obtain the serial number of your Luger?

The Sheriff's Office got the serial number of my Luger when I filled out the necessary registration papers at the FFL dealer where it had to be sent following my purchase. I have applied for my own C & R FFL, but haven't received it as yet.
