Steinar, IMHO anyone (and I don't care how old he is) that stores a gun in that fashion deserves to have his ass handed to him. It's a sensible deal but I don't think he'll go for it though, given the indications for his ability to make sensible decisions.
Personally, I'd give it a try. He clearly has no special attachment to them and you might just save two historic guns.
