Best insurance against being prosecuted for defending yourself....
Keep a steamer trunk and a couple hundred pounds of chain in your garage. When necessary, fire three warning shots to the chest. Put fired bullets and their new container into the steamer trunk, along with the chain. The rest will come to you naturally.
