Ron, The cleaning rod theory is a good a guess as any....Could have been sewn in, looped around and hooked on the tool pouch stud. All I have ever seen were sewn way more to the right of this one.
One other thing to look for Morgan is to the far left of the top along the stitching line..Has there ever been a short cleaning rod tube sewn into this area? There would be 8 to 10 enlarged stitching holes there or extra double stitched thread left there if they did not remove it. If this were present it would confirm that this left over patch were indeed the remnants of a cleaning rod strap. Also look for a rectangular indentation on the inside in this area. Or black rubbings. These tubes leave marks. Jerry Burney
