Steinar,

I would guess a Reichswehr mark 1st Company/ Nachrichten-Abteilung 3rd Regt. weapon 5 1st Company/ Communications Detachment 3rd Regt. weapon #5

Unsure about the astrisk. I've never seen it used before.

Thanks Ron, your knowledge of unit marks keep on impressing me! :)

Steinar,

A fairly scarce marking. I made a minor correction. Sometimes I surprise myself. Thanks!

Is's a great contribution to the forum. A lot of information gained by deciphering the unit marks:)
..wish I had the luger to match the holster

Ever seen simular stamping in the lid?

Morgan, Cannot say about the markings as I am not a marking expert but I wonder what is the leather tab sewn under the top flap of the tool pouch? Jerry Burney

Jerry,

Could it be a cleaning rod sleeve? Maybe improvised differently than is commonly seen?

Steinar,

I know how you feel. I have one marked to the Reichswehr Ministry Communications unit. If I could find the matching Luger, I would die a happy Lugerholic...

I'm a bit confused about the flap also.. Espesially since the stamp seems to be in the same size as the little compartment inside the flap. So I thought perhaps there is a link between the two.

Cleaning rod sleeve seems like another possible answer, perhaps a loop has been there at some point

I tried to look under the flap.
Over 1917 I can read 'K.I' (the 'I' might be a '1' or a weak 'F'.

Ron, The cleaning rod theory is a good a guess as any....Could have been sewn in, looped around and hooked on the tool pouch stud. All I have ever seen were sewn way more to the right of this one.
One other thing to look for Morgan is to the far left of the top along the stitching line..Has there ever been a short cleaning rod tube sewn into this area? There would be 8 to 10 enlarged stitching holes there or extra double stitched thread left there if they did not remove it. If this were present it would confirm that this left over patch were indeed the remnants of a cleaning rod strap. Also look for a rectangular indentation on the inside in this area. Or black rubbings. These tubes leave marks.

Jerry, thanks for the input.
There are no other stiching marks on the holster flap, and the wear marks are quite regular as far I can tell. Some stiching has been repared with a green thread, but the tool pouch and the flap below still have the original thread. So it looks like it has been there from day one.. I added another picture in caseyou can see some tube-marks.
