Default 30 Luger vs 9mm Luger

How does the 7.65mm stack up against the 9mm Luger round? i have heard that the 7.65 is a bad round and that is why the germans switched over the the 9mm's but the 7.65 can't be that bad if it stayed in production alongside the 9mm lugers and ive also seen Ruger 89's and Browning Hi Powers in the 30 luger. Can someone shed some light for me on the 30.luger's stopping power and what not. Also would the round make a decent self defense round or would it just be better to use it as a plinker? Reason i ask is because im just kinda currious and you guys seem to know what your talking about when it comes to this sorta thing
