Crazy germans and their stocked pistols

Why were the germans so hardcore on having the option of putting a stock on their pistols? i mean dont get me wrong i really like Lugers with stock lugs on them, i think it's more comfortable to hold when it's got one. But why would the germans put a stock on a luger that has say a 4inch barrel? i mean to me that kinda sounds silly but i dunno. I mean on an Arty i could see it as being like a carbine because of the barrel being so long. But on a 4inch luger that just dosent make much sense to me.....
