Crazy germans and their stocked pistols

Why were the germans so hardcore on having the option of putting a stock on their pistols? i mean dont get me wrong i really like Lugers with stock lugs on them, i think it's more comfortable to hold when it's got one. But why would the germans put a stock on a luger that has say a 4inch barrel? i mean to me that kinda sounds silly but i dunno. I mean on an Arty i could see it as being like a carbine because of the barrel being so long. But on a 4inch luger that just dosent make much sense to me.....:p

Brandon, this has been bantered about back and forth for years, but most folks are in agreement, it was left on for manufacturing the luger, not to use as a true stocklug...

Almost all artillery's were made for WW1, not later. And BTW, it is illegal to put a stock onto a 4 inch barrrel (some exceptions or if you have a license to do so).

lol u dont have to worry Ed, i dont intend now if ever to put a stock on a 4inch Luger or on any pistol at that. i think the only handgun i could possibiliy want a stock put on would be for a Mauser Broomhandle. Or maybe if i could ever find it, a Heckler Koch VP70 because then with a stock it could shoot in bursts :) haha but like i'll ever find that being it's so rare >_<

Personally, I think a stock would help any pistol relize the inherent accuracy, four inch or otherwise. I can't test the theory due to legalities, but my conviction is firm.

However, it would naturally destroy the convenience of the arm, the primary reason for a handgun.

Rod...it would naturally destroy the convenience of the arm, the primary reason for a handgun.

The Imperial German Navy used the stocked 6" Navy Luger as a boarding weapon and for shore parties. Easy and small to store on shipboard or submarine but could be made into a short range rifle .
Pretty novel idea! Jerry Burney

yep, I agree, Jerry. My reference was to a pistol carried on the person.

I know some guys who say they can conceal some very big pistols. I'm not among them. And anything over an 8 3/8" N frame Smith is too much for me in the field when hunting; actually smaller than that is a lot better.

I love my stocked artillery, but actually I consider it more a carbine than a pistol.
