Jim, dry firing most weapons is not a good idea. I have done it on occassion, although I have ehad many stories of the time they did it and broke a firing pin.
There are snap caps they sell that deaden the impact (look like cartridges, but are rubber on the end). Still many say that the force of the firing pin striking whatever is bad for it.
