Highlighted serial numbers

Ok, here's my stupid question of the day. I have seen photo's of Lugers on this forum with serial numbers highlighted in white. I have seen this on other guns over the years, but never knew if this is was original, or done by the owner for aesthetic reasons. I sure someone will tell me what it is and where to find it. I do like the way it looks, which brings me to my second question. What do you think about doing this to a fine collectible?
