Highlighted serial numbers

Ok, here's my stupid question of the day. I have seen photo's of Lugers on this forum with serial numbers highlighted in white. I have seen this on other guns over the years, but never knew if this is was original, or done by the owner for aesthetic reasons. I sure someone will tell me what it is and where to find it. I do like the way it looks, which brings me to my second question. What do you think about doing this to a fine collectible?

Correction, I meant to say serial numbers and other markings.

The white is simply to highlight the marking or stamping. Collectors use markers / sticks that is removable and will not hurt the finish or gun.

It is totally acceptable to do this (must be of non-caustic material and removable).

BTW, the white in the "safety" area Gesichert, is the only area that was orginally marked with white.

They sell marking sticks at Brownells, I bought a white, gold and silver, for around 5 or 6 dollars apiece.

I will second Ed on this..

I use Brownells LackerStick in Gold/ White to highlight markings on pistols....a great product, cheap, easy to use & easily removed. It doesnt affect the original finish...

A couple of weeks ago there was a discussion--I think in the General Topics section--containing tips and tricks on how best to apply LaquerStik. It is straightforward to apply, but takes a little time and effort to get the best results.

Also, the Gesichert marking is not really white, it is originally a kind of lemony yellow, so simply applying white LaquerStik there will stick out pretty badly. I haven't tried it, but it is probably easy to tint a bit of it the proper color and then apply.

True, the lacquer stick is too white. I use Antique White Rub N' Buff which can be purchased at craft stores. This color gives you a nice aged look. It comes in a small tube which lasts forever. Just rub a little in the letters, let it dry, and wipe off the exces with a solvent like acetone or naptha.
