help identifying a symbol in American Eagle 1900

My theory

To compare this symbol with the grooves* of the barrel polygonal, I could tell that the mark points or represent the four grooves of the barrel, which are from left to right.

But this is only a deduction, the result of my observation and I could not find anything written about it, for which grateful opinions or comments.
