help identifying a symbol in American Eagle 1900
 

Luger 1900 American Eagle

Hi Hugo, Bienvenido!

One of the 1900 experts will answer this shortly. My question is; Does your Luger happen to fall within the US test serial number range? I know many Lugers made their way to Mexico and tracking this progress is of interest to all collectors.

the weapon in question is outside the range of the eagles of range, it is in the range 5600 to 5700. before the eagles

Hugo, I haven't seen that one before, but by it's location I would guess that it's a DWM inspector's marking. TH

"four-circle lozenge"
 

On page 850 of Gortz Sturgess book on Pistol Parabellum this mark is called an "four-circle lozenge" inspectors mark used around SN5000.

My theory

To compare this symbol with the grooves* of the barrel polygonal, I could tell that the mark points or represent the four grooves of the barrel, which are from left to right.

But this is only a deduction, the result of my observation and I could not find anything written about it, for which grateful opinions or comments.

I concurr with Jim_R. Gortz & Sturgess identifiy the "four-circle lozenge" as one of about 11 different inspectors marks used during DWM production 1899-1930. My M1900 commercial has it.

Don't try to read too much into an inspector's marks. It could represent anything from an assigned design the inspector had no say in to something very personal such as part of his family crest. The truth is that there is very little verified information on the use and design of inspector's marks that has survived to this day.

No te preocupes. Este foro respeta a todos y todas tus preguntas son validas. El hecho es que simplemente no existen datos sobre el uso y designacion de estas estampillas de inspeccion. Hay colecionistas en Europa, (y miembros de este foro) que siguen buscando documentacion al respecto, pero hasta el dia de hoy no se sabe mas de lo que ya se ofrecio aqui.

Nothing serious: just saying that no documments regarding factory's inspectors marks has been found up to date. Alain is just being polite by answering the question in Hugo's native language.
