1916 Holster

I have a 1916 dated P-08 holster that someone has cut a couple of slots into between the belt loops. The slots are about as wide as the belt loop and the about the same spacing. The rear loop seems to be a replacement. Any idea what the slots were for. All I can think is maybe the original loop broke and a makeshift loop was tied through till the new one could be sewn on.
