1916 Holster

I have a 1916 dated P-08 holster that someone has cut a couple of slots into between the belt loops. The slots are about as wide as the belt loop and the about the same spacing. The rear loop seems to be a replacement. Any idea what the slots were for. All I can think is maybe the original loop broke and a makeshift loop was tied through till the new one could be sewn on. Thanks...Chip

Hi Fazer,

Looks like you've got a holster that was modified for the Norwegian web belt hanger after WW2.

The loops were cut off and a leather strap that held the metal web belt hanger was riveted in place with 4 rivets.

Many of those holsters were restored when they came on the market in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The hanger was removed, the holes left or just plugged and new loops were sewn on.

Thought I'd add a couple of pictures. It seems as though it was to add a belt loop, to me anyway.

Hi,

Well, the good news is: No Norwegian conversion. It indeed looks like a makeshift belt loop.

If someone is going to carry the luger sideways? Isn't that odd placement of the cuts?

And thye look like original belt loops, so why would someone do this?

First time I have ever seen this type of cut on a holster. Can't explain it myself. Just some idiot with a stupid idea and a pocket knife! Usually I see virtical slits where the belt loops were and they thread a belt thru the slits.

Looking at the compression marks above the lower slot which might indicate upward pressure, i.e. what you might expect if the holster was suspended at that point, could they have been cut for a shoulder strap of some sort?

Ron, Yes..I thought that too but not a very effecient way to do it, one hole above the other..more logical would be one on either side to accomodate a shoulder strap.
There can be no end of theories but the fact of the matter is... what used to be a good collectable holster has two holes in it!
