Post Gothic "S" (Fraktur) S/42 Marked Toggle

My Russian-capture, forced-matched VOPO import (from AIM) is dated 1938 but has a forced matched toggle (link) marked "S/42". The letter "S" is not a normal S but the curvy German Fraktur "S."

I thought this different type of "S" was significant, but some "experts" at a gunshow recently told me that it doesn't mean anything special.

Can someone give me the real lowdown on what models and years the Gothic (Fraktur) "S" was used on the S/42 Luger?
