The days of the real surplus stores are over. Today they are "Outdoor Stores".
I can still remember taking the bus into NYC in the 1960-70s to visit Kaufman's Surplus. They owned several warehouses on prime Manhattan real estate, (42nd St. just a couple of blocks from Time's Square and South Broadway, just up from Houston St.).
You could spend days in there and never see the entire inventory. They were also constantly receiving new inventory as goverment warehouses all over the world were getting rid of stuff. The glory days of military surplus.
