Default 1900 AE investment potential

I saw a very nice Luger at a gun show Saturday. Almost all the blue is intact, though faded a bit. The guy had it for sale at $2895, said it was appraised for $3700. He said he bought it at a very good price some years ago. Being a fool, of course, I would like to start working on my wife for this. Another safe queen! Help! What's wrong with me?
Ok, Assuming I get the gun appraised and it is worth the money, will a Luger keep up with or surpass inflation? I've paid way too much many times for a pretty gun, and usually don't regret it. Thanks for the advice, I know the reason to buy a gun is basically personal, I'm looking for legitimate justification for the outlay.
