Police Luger DWM

Could put this Luger to my collection.

Oooo...The magazine safety looks intact!!!

That makes it...odd...if not rare...

If the price was in line with other police Lugers, I would take an intact mag safety Luger over a mutilated safety...Even though many Luger collectors think that an intact safety is not correct...

Looks like a nice example of a 29 DWM issued to the Landjägerei of the Prussian administrative district of Hildesheim. May we know the serial number and letter suffix?

It does appear that the Walther magazine safety is intact but the shape of the edge of the frame behind the trigger suggests that an original safety was deactivated by grinding. If so, someone has substituted an intact safety for the original.

All three of my Lugers have a 'scallop' behind the trigger on the left side only...is that what you are seeing???...

Rich, that is what I was looking at but now realize a scallop is part of the design of the frame. Thanks for pointing this out. Unless this area shows evidence of later grinding, the Walther safety on this gun is probably original.

Don, for my sake (and Otto's), would you say an intact Walther Sicherung adds to the value of a police Luger??? Or as Giualfi maintains, does it detract from the value???

Intact safeties add considerably to the value. They are scarce since the Germans put out an order to delete them.

Rich, that is very difficult to say because it depends on the collector. I try to answer such questions from the point of view of the "average collector" and I suspect he doesn't much care! The fact that a Luger rig with a supposedly original intact Walther safety has languished for many months on GunBroker with a minimum bid set at $5,500 is proof that it is not a highly sought-after feature. If an intact safety is believed to be original and that it somehow escaped the deactivation order, it might add a few hundred dollars to the value because of its rarity; however, the buyer would have to have some knowledge of the history of these devices to be willing to pay this premium.

My concern with the idea of "restoring" a police Luger by replacing a deactivated safety with an intact one is that it falsifies the history of the pistol. If I suspected that had happened, I wouldn't buy the gun at all. However, I try to not be "average."

I would concur with Ron in that intact Walther magazine safeties are rare to find and do add value to the Luger. The Luger on GunBroker at $5,500 really doesn't fairly identify the value of these safeties being intact, because it is so far overpriced. Don's assessment that they add a few hundred dollars to the value of a basic Police Luger is in my opinion correct. I have 2 Police pistols in my meager collection with intact Walther safeties and am very happy to have found them.

We have a saying here in the US that goes "I would jump on that like a duck on a Junebug". I know that doesn't make much sense but basically I think you would be making a very good purchase if you can acquire this gun. Congratulations on finding it. It seems as though you have discovered a very good source of fine firearms.
