Question Need info on scope mount for a .22 rifle

I have in my possession an old bolt action ,single shot, .22 rifle, marked as a JC Higgins Model 103.18. I believe it is also known as a Marlin Model 100. Does anybody know what type of scope mount that would be used on said rifle? I keep running across references to an N3 Weaver scope mount, but can't seem to find a complete list of guns that the N3 can fit. Is it even the correct mount?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have that exact .22 single-shot bolt rifle in my safe. It was/is my first gun, presented to me on my 13th birthday in 1963. Bought new at a local Sears Roebuck. I just had it out a few months ago to blow off the last of an old box of .22's. Still pretty accurate.

Sorry, I have no idea what scope mount would fit on it. But I bought a 'parts set' minus barrel/receiver on GB a few months back; if you need a part, I may have it.

Is the receiver of the rifle without the mounting grooves for a .22 scope?

Yes, it lacks the mounting grooves.

Yours must be an early one... I owned the same rifle as a child and it had the grooves to mount a .22 scope. The old Weaver N3 mount is what you need, but you probably have to drill and tap for the screws into your receiver.

Here is a photo of the mount, and also a photo of the mount that is attached to a .22 rifle of similar vintage...

Here's what mine looks like. The iron sight 'dovetail' isn't even a 'standard' cut.

I also once owned a Stevens .22 tube-fed bolt action with that style side-mount scope mount. I think the open top receiver of the Higgins would require an offset scope too.

That looks like my tube-fed 22 Stevens, and even has the same steel-strap trigger guard.

The receiver looks different from the Higgins [pic below] but the N3 looks like it would work. I had forgotten that the N3 used 7/8" scopes. Do they even make 7/8" scopes today???

Thank you gentlemen for the replies.

Shame I didn't catch the N3 on ebay in time. Hopefully another one will pop up soon. Funny thing, my .22 in was a wall hanger in the gun room for about two years till I added it to the repair list. Picked it up from a friend down the street when we went to get a wood gun cabinet from him. He didn't need the cabinet and the .22 didn't work so we took both. $17 later, I installed a new trigger into it, cleaned it up of rust and dirt, and now I got an accurate rifle to plink with.

Don't know who painted the horses on the stock though. I think they do still make 7/8 scopes....Tasco I think makes one?

Well, it had an extra mounting screw hole...That's not preferable...

[Edit: Winning bid: US $15.49]

The Higging receiver is ideal for the side-mount scope base...It's just a tube with the bolt slot cut away...You can drill & tap straight through, not tap a blind hole (always a PITA)...

IIRC, the N3 mounts offset to the bore axis...It doesn't sit directly on top of the bore, but a quarter-inch or so to the left...On a .22 single shot, it's not a big deal.

There was one scope mount I saw advertised years ago that I liked...It was hinged...So if you were sighting in on a 300 yard shot and a bighorn sheep walked out 50 feet in front of you, you could flip the scope to the side and use the iron sights...

I've never been a scope fan (only had one scoped rifle in my life) but that would have gone on my hunting rifle...If NYS law had allowed rifles here...

I own no scoped rifles at the moment, but I have a K31 rifle on standby for a scope and mount. Wish it was easier to scope out my my K98 but that requires some SERIOUS gunsmithing to do it correctly. IF you can find a gusmith who knows old guns!!!

A hinged scope mount?! Did it lock into place to hold zero?

I don't know. Never saw one in person, just the ads.

Pachmayr makes/made a 'Lo-Swing' mount...This is on an M1; I couldn't find a good pic on a bolt action...

It seems to have gotten more complicated since last I saw the ads...

Edit: Found a pic of the older less-complicated model...

And a screen grab from a Pachmayr ad...
