1920 is a government property marking, not a production date. Although some pistols were actually produced in 1920 and 1921 and thus got a legit 1920 production date.

Cheers mate, the property stamp ( or what I thought was a date) looks as if it was hand stamped as it's kinda of centre. It's DWM manufactured & all matching numbers apart from mag , that's 3rd reich issue.

welcome to the forum

you have not provided enough information to help a lot. We can say it is a five digit commercial model that possibly was in army issue so receiving the 1920 gov't marking. as that marking is a govt marking, not a date

many more pictures and words would help.

See 'how to ID a luger' sticky here on the new collectors board.

I think I have found the information I needed to date this gun! Thanks to this fine forum. Production ended in 1918 around 74722 with lazy m proofs on commercial guns, my guns serial is 72828 and has lazy proofs , so only 1894 ish from the end of production.!! Or am I missing something?

i agree, that you have a M1914 commerical made before 1918, that may have been appropriated by the military during WW1 and marked as military property (1920 on the receiver) after the war. TH

Hi Paul, and welcome to the forum.

You are correct about being near the end of that commercial production run.

"M1914" is a variation of Lugers which George also mentioned as "1914 Commercial".

As Tom and Ed mentioned, it saw a lot of history before making it into your family's hands. This gun is one instance where the additional mark (the 1920) adds to it's history...

The 1920 property stamp was also used by the police. However, sn suggests it may be Commercial Army. What stamps are on the right side of the receiver
