Default Hello, new guy here

Hello, new guy here.

I have three Lugers. I thought I was done at two but then I found a nice shooter last week so here we are!

Have an issue with the 1916 Artillery up top, I will be asking about later.

So again, hello!

It is all matching, and it has the micrometer sights. Of course I had to shoot it once, and when I did the striker retainer came out of the back of the bolt. A tiny piece of metal broke off of the bolt that holds the striker retainer in.

I need someone who can add some weld material and machine back to shape. I have a metalurgist / engineer friend who also has a specialty welder friend, but if anyone knows a Luger doctor who might have tackled this I'd love to talk to them.

The firing pin spring guide on my 1900AE also broke. It was a non-numbered part so replacing it was easily accomplished with the help of Tom Heller [The Lugerdoc].

Welding it would not be recommended, I would think...

I think that what Chris_1552 has, is a broken bolt not a broken firing pin spring guide. If it can't be welded the bolt will be condemned, and that is a numbered part.

I understand that welding that broken bit is very difficult, but not impossible. Hopefully someone here main help.

Yes kurusu, that is correct.

Here is a photo. As you can see, we're talking about a VERY SMALL amount of material here.

Here in Portugal I know of at least one successful repair of this same problem, it was done some 20 years ago and the gun is still functional. Sadly the man who made the repair is no longer with us.

Some time back on this forum, there was a discussion on this very matter. You may want to do a search. Also folks that do a lot of excellent work on Lugers like Ollie and GT...and others, may well be able to point you in the correct direction. Good luck!!

Welcome and thanks for showing your fine collection.

From what I know of Luger repair/welding, the generally accepted way to weld small amounts of metal onto Luger parts is TIG welding. You can search on the internet re: that process.

My local gunsmith (TJ's Gunsmithing Aurora CO) does TIG welding I believe and is comfortable working on Lugers. TIG welding requires skill and equipment; a high quality gunsmith in your area might be able to weld/repair the part.

Beyond getting it fixed - I would suggest you investigate why it broke. A mainspring that is too weak can allow the breech bolt to slam into the rear of the pistol, causing the damage you have sustained. That's not a diagnosis, but a suggestion so you don't get it repaired only to have it break again.
