I looked at my books And the Mauser standard pretty much resembles a WWII K98K rifle. The only major differences's I noticed were the straight bolt, stock finger grooves, and sling swivels on the bottom of the stock. I bet the one you saw had a muzzle cap on it. I saw no references to an even shorter carbine. I do know that F.N. made similar rifles(23.5" barrels) and carbines(18" or so, barrels).
