If the name of the destroyer was indeed Fanning, it wasn't DD385 as stated, but DD37.

It happened in November 1917.

DD385 Fanning never saw a German U Boat. It spent all the war in the Pacific theater.

Edit: If anyone wants to know, the sub pictured is U-58, a type U 57 submarine that was launched in 1916.
