Around 4000 large grip short barrel were made from s/n counting. Rumor saying 1000 were French contract. So, historically, it's called "French Gendarme". Assume that's true. Other 3000 should be commercial. Just like small grip variation is called "Bolo", but it does not have to pass through Red Russian's hand to be called so. It's just a name assigned by collectors to identify this post WWI variation.
