Alf, I would need to see the number in the wood..I never like anything stamped in the wood except Anchor M or other type Navy indicators. Serial numbers or dates etc are usually a bad sign.
Yes, There should be a serial number stamped in the stock iron..just like an Artillery stock. Will likely have no suffix or an A suffix.
The stock iron or the steel disc is where you see most of the stampings although there are others ...
The type of wood/grain is a strong factor.
