G date magazine proof marks?
Picked up a Magazine for my G date because on the aluminum bottom it had the same letter suffix as mine, and the serial number was only a couple 100 #'s off. I was really happy to get it since it was so close. My question is?? on the spine of the magazine itself, at the very bottom, is an "S" and a droop wing eagle with a "6" under it. Looking that up on this website under "technical info" "proof marks" it says Simson "parts proof". I told you I'd get to the question here..... Does this magazine go with the "G' date bottom??? OR Do you think it has been switched along the way???? Should I keep them together??? Or would it be O.K. to replace the magazine with the proper one?????

Does this magazine go with the "G' date bottom??? If you mean is it a G-Date Magazine, the answer is NO!
OR Do you think it has been switched along the way???? If you mean did someone use a non-G-Date Magazine, the answer is YES Should I keep them together??? It's your Luger, so do as you please!! Or would it be O.K. to replace the magazine with the proper one????? I would try to find a magazine with a bright nickle plated tube with an aluminum bottom that has the same acceptance mark as the most rear mark on the right side of the receiver! |
Thanks Frank, That is basically what I wanted to know, " What you,as an avid collector would do. I was asking under the pretense of, what type of magazine would make my "G" date luger more valuable or at least keep it's value as a collectable Luger. And I'm also trying to find a magazine that will work properly also. So I guess I want the best of both worlds. Is it acceptable practice to switch magazine bases with magazine bodies to acheive and maintain collectability with function????

Your G-Date is as valuable as it's going to get, unless you can locate a matching magazine.
Most Lugers do not have matching magazines, but I always try to find a magazine that is "proper" for my pistols. By that, I mean to find a magazine with the proper construction, the proper Waffenamt Mark and as close to the serial number (both alpha and numeric parts) as possible. I always prefer the same letter block. If you would provide me the serial number (both parts) and the Waffenamt Sequence on the right side of the receiver, I'll try to help. Let me just repeat what I said before - It's your pistol, do as you please!!!! |
