Question re: Commercial Barrel/Receiver
 

I'm looking at a barrel + extension ['receiver'] on GB and it has the C/N but it also has the artillery notch...

The 5-digit barrel serial matches the toggle number (in a separate auction) and seller says it is 30 cal...Toggle is DWM...Rear toggle has integral rear sight...

No proofs (see pic).

Why would a commercial barrel extension have the artillery sight notch??? :confused:

I see a c/n on the barrel and receiver; I suspect it is a scrubbed military receiver; perhaps the C/Ns are from Suhl and added in the 1920s?

Most likely an unfinished (no date, no hardness acceptance) leftover from LP08 production, ended up in commercial parts stock. C/Ns are Berlin commercial office proofs.

The edges look sharp, the barrel stampings have halos, there's a goodly amount of grit everywhere. And the seller admits to a sewer pipe bore.

Caveat emptor. :(

The barreled receiver came today; it does have a scrubbed chamber. I suppose it would have had a date, but it's gone now. :(

Rest of it looks good; no buffing, no loss of sharp edges. Fits on my P08 frame OK. Barrel is shot. I removed the barrel and cleaned up the receiver.

Tomorrow I'll start on a 140mm/145mm barrel, in either .256 or .22. I took Ed's pic of his Navy and blew it up to life-size and measured the barrel length; 140mm to 145mm is what I get. I'll likely keep the P08 minor/major taper dimensions.

I'm thinking ~140mm for the 256 and 120mm for the .22. Subject to review. :rolleyes:

Good news on the barrel extension. Even went onto the frame ok..........tis good. Usually the ones I get one side goes to Phoenix and the other to Walla Walla.

Barrel length, what is a few mm's among friends?.....:)

I have seen a picture of a 25/30 Luger chambered Luger somewhere on another forum, said it worked ok; maybe the additional bullet weight? Little 25 cal bullets are hard to find for me, the 25/20, 250/3000 and 256 boys aways have their nose to the ground.

I have my die making material in front of me, about to blast off somewhere myself, but a good ways behind you right now. Still crawdaddying left and right here. Looked at the BOZ and TCM(short) but always the reamer, and not up to making a D.

Twas good news, hope you do it with your usual flair...........:)...it will get great fun for you.

I think stuff like the sub caliber Luger's are part of their history, maybe some renditions more recent to be sure, but still a part of the lore to the shooter group.

What prompted a previous owner to grind off the chamber date is still a mystery. As much as grinding off stock lugs on other Lugers, I suppose... :rolleyes:

Twas a sincere form of support for Sheepherder's potential project, and that the part he procured was a good one functionally.

The 224 BOZ and 22 TCM are relatively new cartridges made purposely for submachinegun with low recoil and great concealablity. They FWIW were noted to be able to penetrate most armor worn today at the time of their offering. If you ever fired a submachine gun in 9mm or above, you know they can be a handful to hold onto, the little cases are more like early Ingrims(sp?). The BOZ and TCM are on the internet for those that care to know more. They just happen to be on the short side of most 22 centerfires, hence thought for the 22 Luger project...

A "D" reamer is simply a made up simplistic reamer to whatever dimensions one would want. That too is on the net. D reamers are free for those that know how, multi fluted reamers begin at 150 bucks. Not everyone is made of money like you guys.

No more from me on the 22 Luger project, the way I feel now with the pain/blood; no words can do any more harm. But I will bow out and will not let the door hit me on the way out. I can take hassle, harsh words, but intolerance is hard for me to get over. And we all wonder why the gun guys have no new replacements............

I wish Sheepherder the best in his project, he will make it work; more than you two can do.............

I will bow out of this and the 'companion' thread also. I'm not a collector and this forum is collector oriented. Modifications to Lugers seem to generate disinterest. :rolleyes:
