GT barrel replacement!
 

I had picked up a completely stripped receiver at Allentown, on purpose because I had noticed GT's comments about now doing barrels.

I sent him two receivers and two barrels, figured I would give him a challenge, turned out, I gave him more of a challenge than intended.

Top is a 1900 receiver (I was told, is it?) with a nice barrel I had picked up some time ago in 30 Luger.

Bottom is a WW1 era, but scrubbed date receiver that he put on a 9mm barrel.

Evidently the witness marks were missing so much harder for poor GT.

As you can see, they turned out very well. I have plenty of parts for a 1908 to build up a shooter, but not as many 1900 parts :confused:

Hi To all, as you can tell be Ed's post.. we are making progress on the barrel replacement process! Currently, even though we are having success, we are no'where near making it the fool proof operation I'm after!!! :eek:.. And believe me, there is a lot of room for fools in this game, me included!! :)
We are adding tools, fixtures, and jigs as we go, and, as they are required.. One thing working for me so far is they have all been shooter grade parts so if I did make a mistake, the bucks wouldn't be so high to replace the part... most of the receivers show quite a bit of "improper" previous work, and I'm sure that is why they were available... I haven't marked or marred anything yet, (since the very first one, which I ended up destroying!...:jumper:) and every time now gets me further away from "screw-up", and closer to "fool proof" .... Keep those projects coming boys! Best to you all, til...lat'r....GT BTW, many thanks to my customers who have utilized my efforts so far! It is appreciated! :cheers:

G.T. installed a barrel for me, too. It is now on my lesser 1906 American Eagle (short frame), a 6" pencil taper .30 Luger, which was created by turning down a standard configuration barrel and modifying the sight block and barrel band. Our own Ed Tinker sold me the barrel, This replaces the nasty 3 3/4" military style barrel with mangled sight block and weird sight leaf that was on it when I scored the gun at RIAC a couple years ago.. I promise to post some pics in the near future. G.T. got the headspace correct, and the pistol actually seems to chamber/work better than before. A test mag with six rounds was gobbled up without any indigestion whatsoever! I report that I am one happy camper!

Glad you guys like my concept made manifest! Thanks again, G.T., for your fine contribution. My local machinist, well... He had tapered the front of the bbl. first and then created a straight cylinder near the rear, using the extra material there, so he could hold it while milling the barrel band and sight block. Finally, he resumed the taper and contoured the barrel flange. There was a step where the taper was resumed, and another where the taper meets the flange. It took me about an hour to carefully straighten it all out on my lathe and establish the final surface. Otherwise, the nice right grip panel came from Hugh; swapped the janky old one and some dough for it. Front sight--not yet installed-- and grip safety spring from Tom. I had to make an over-sized safety lever pin myself, as the one in it kept falling out when the left grip was removed. The next step in this extravaganza is for me to TIG weld a small chunk broken out of one rail of the barrel extension and get it worked down straight. Finally, I'll try my hand at a little rust bluing and straw finishing. All this done, I think I'll be very close to breaking even in its then value as a nice shooter versus what I have spent on it. The key, I think, is not to charge yourself for your own work!

GT, et al: I have a 4 inch 9mm parts Luger I'd like to convert to a 6 inch BBL. Any sources for a 6 inch barrel and could you do the installation and front sight swap? The gun is just a shooter, but I'd much the prefer the look of the 6 inch if I can get the right barrel. Thanks!
