42 Commercial Banner Luger
 

Very interesting Mauser variation. Strawed small parts in 1942. Unnumbered extractor, firing pin, holdopen, and inside sideplate. Unmarked magazine with convex pin. Type 5 black plastic grips.

Please check. Is the entire trigger plate (including the pin) blued?

Is the muzzle completely blued?

Nice Luger. I imagine that even in that late production year that strawed small parts might be possible on a commercial gun, but I can't say for sure that I have seen a previous specimen like this. (My memory isn't what it used to be, but what is?). Most all post-1937 Mausers have all salt blued parts.

I am not convinced that the grips are OEM. Could we please see a clear focus close-up of the inside of the grips? From the initial photos of the grip exterior and the fit in the area of the safety lever they appear that they might be reproduction grips.

I would also have expected to see the number '91' stamped on the inside of the sideplate.

Tom, a fine Mauser. I have seen a few of these mostly in the "w" suffix range. Most have Mauser toggles, a few have byf toggles, strawed small parts and phenolic resin grip plates. Most have had the P.08 frame designation. The mags have been unnumbered, convex pins, unmarked tubes, and on some the fxo black base mags.

I also have another "42" date that has a side plate that is not numbered inside. sn 7152g.

This is occasionally found according to Don Hallock and Joop's book.

Thanks for the pictures. It confirms that blued retention pins were normal (both my 42 date Lugers have them). Also looks like the muzzle is blued too, right?

Process steps must have been simplified this late in production at the factory...

Tom, that's a nice one. Wish mine were as pretty. Yours is about 500 later than this one.

Steve, I see yours has an Eagle/N proof which would be correct for your serial number range. Your gun looks good to me!
