Holster storage, preservation & packing???
 

Anyone with experience or education with the storage and interior packing for holsters?

I have been told a good packing material is newspaper and myself I have been using the small bubble wrap. Not packed too tightly but enough to keep the form.

Also, what are the thoughts or experience for keeping the corresponding mag-clip in the pouch while in storage?

Any experience and thoughts?

I use plastic shopping bags. They compress and expand gently once they are in place. And not likely to draw moisture or mildew. You can purchase inexpensive dummy magazine forms to maintain the mag pouches.

I use plastic grocery bags.

Newspaper has bothered me because of the chemicals used in the ink and in making it. Probably irrational on my part, but since the bags are so easy to some by, I have went with the bags.

One thing to be careful of when using newspaper though. Within the last week, I noticed that a (luger) holster had newspaper put in the magaine pouch (by the former owner) to protect its shape. I had one heck of a time in getting the paper out. It was coming out in little bits and pieces. At one point in time I thought that I would have to go the hardware and look for some long skinny tweezers to do the job.

I hang them on the wall. Seems to work well, apart from the regular dusting required.

I make little 'holster hangers' by bending paper clips in a triangular shape. This can be hooked behind one of the holster's belt loops and hung on a nail in the wall.

We have pretty consistant room temperatures and a very stable, relatively low humidity level, so no other measures are needed.

OH SURE!!! You have walls...;)

Problem is, I'm running out of wall space :D

It may indicate that you have small walls, but I suspect it is more a function of a very impressive collection.:thumbup:

Seriously though, my walls have shelves in front of them. I am sort of a pack rat - I still have the train I received for my 5th birthday. So I have holsters in boxes on the shelves, in bags, in storage containers, etc.

On June 22, 2006. we had water damage, and they moved the furniture back into the house a couple of days before Christmas. So many things were moved, re-moved, piled on each other, etc so they could work on the house. Then there were a few intervening problems of a different nature.

Now, I have started trying to group the holsters together. I thought I had 10 or 11 - 1935 dated military holsters. So far I have only been able to find 9 of them.

I have found some holsters that I have to send to Jerry for work.

It is a matter of small walls, rather than an extensive collection, really :)

Here is an interesting story about storing leather.....I store some of my leather in large plastic bins. I had put some partially finished pieces in a plastic tub over the Winter..they were dyed very heavily..a dark brown. When I came back 6 months later..where ever the leather had touched the sides of the plastic/rubber? box it had bleached out the dye to almost white. Most amazing thing I have had happen to me in some time! The room these are kept in is dark..pitch dark so it wasn't sunlight that did it. Only thing I can attribute it to is whatever chemical is leaching out of the plastic.

So DON"T store holsters in large poly tubs!

I have walls, but I'm not the one who controls what goes on them.

Thanks very much. Some great thoughts and ideas.
I like the wall display aspect but I also have limited avialable wall space due to 'Play Boy' pin ups. (just kidding) But to display on a wall or even in an enclosed glass cabinet sounds like interesting options if the space is available.

As a matter of fact, the pin ups can be combined with the holsters quite well, as long as the subject matches a little. :)
