Luger grip

The general consensus seems to be that Georg Luger angled the grip of his pistol for better feel and pointing. Not so. The Borchardt recoil spring, often considered clumsy, in fact was made so as to provide the proper downward force on the toggle to close it properly. When Luger put the spring in the grip, and tried to use the straight grip of the Borchardt, the spring force was almost all toward the front, not downward. Getting the necessary downward force required bending the grip backward. The unique feel and perfection of the Luger grip was, essentially, accidental. Worse, that wonderful grip required a magazine that is a lot less than wonderful; the Borchardt's straight magazine was much more reliable.
