Magazine 9mm or 30 cal?
 

Is there a visual way to tell a 9mm magazine from a 30 cal magazine?

one in the same.....no differance between a 30 and a 9mm mag

Puma, Since the rear of the cartridges are the same there is no size differences to deal with.

A .30 Luger cartridge is just a necked down 9MM.

Both cartridges work the same in all Luger magazines.

Which is partially true, as there were differences in 9mm and .30 cal magazines at several times. The difference was the spring strength.

This appears to have gone away, quite soon, only to be revived by Mauser in the 1970s.

Well, to be correct should it not be the other way around(?):
-the 9mm is a "necked up" 7.65mm, as the 7.65mm was the
first parabellum cartirdge

What you are talking about is the DEVELOPMENT of the 9MM from the .30 Luger cartridge. The progressive development by Georg Luger of opening up the .30 Luger case to make the 9MM is vaguely familiar to us mountain folk.

Should it be the other way round? Gosh..now you got me wonderin...By the way, welcome to the Forum. Good to see a newbie with answers instead of questions!

While the Luger magazines will handle both the 9mm and the 7.65mm, there were cosmetic differences in some of the early commercial versions. Very early commercial magazines were marked 9mm on the wood knob. In the 1920s some of the commercial magazines were marked 7.65mm.
