Since buying a Kreifhoff Luger, I was wanting to know more info on this pistol and John Dunkle was very kind to help answer my questions. But, I wanted to know more about this pistol so I bought the book "The Kreighoff Parabellum" by Randall Gibson. When I was home last weekend it had arrived and I gave it a quick overlook and thought that this may be more interesting than I thought. The reason for this is that Gibson has written the book around a comparison of the Kreighoff Luger and the ones produced by Mauser, Simson, and DWM. This book really gives good information on the Lugers other than Kreighoff! In effect, you get a comparison of the major manufacturers with information not contained in the other Luger books.


Until I received this book, I never realized how much good Luger information it contains. I would like to highly recommend that this book be one of the regularly used books when doing research on the different parts of the Luger, the stamps, finishes, machining, grips, etc. It is GREAT. I am reading it in the evenings at my apartment and really absorbing every word.


John D., I don't know if this book was a well kept secret of the real Kreighoff collectors or not, but it is a must buy book; I wish I had done that many years ago. Please make any comments from your viewpoint.

Randall Gibson is in the same island of tables that we are in Tulsa, and he is one heck of a nice guy.

I will look at those pages tonight when I get in! I am about half way through the book and was amazazed at the wealth of information on Lugers other than the Kreighoff. I wish I had bought this book a long time ago!

I'm a little late to this thread - sorry about that!!!


Mr. Gibson's book is a terrific reference - no question about it! When I first started collecting Kriegs - it was my sole source of info. on the rare variation. If the truth were known, I actually have two copies - one signed over to me from Mr. Gibson personally, so I might be a little biased in my opinion...


Anyway - as you pursue Kriegs, I've also had the good fortune to inspect many Kriegs personally either by request of folks or at shows/stores. For that, one learns what to look for - whether machining marks unique to Kreigs, or certain stamps or areas to look for that separate a "genuine" from a good forgery. I don't think a book can displace that "first hand" knowledge, if you know what I mean?


Anyway - to answer your question specifically - most Krieg collectors do use Mr. Gibson's excellent research as a starting point, but not the final "word". For example - while his index of "known" Kriegs is useful - it is also fairly old, so folks shouldn't depend solely on that serialized list to decide if a Kreig is "real" or not.


So, my take is if anyone is the least bit interested in Kriegs (or a different opinion on Ku Lugers) - then this book is a "must have"....
