What are your thoughts of a luger as a self defense pistol?

If anything its cool looking and makes a statement but I was wondering what you lugermaniacs out there take on this?

I don't think you'll find a more fervant bunch of Luger fanatics anywhere, but my guess is, to a man, they will all tell you, "Buy a SIG, or a Glock, or any of the the truly dependable modern CCW weapons".


The Luger, if not legendary, is then certainly well known, for its ammo sensitivity, feeding problems, and jams. If your life is on the line, it just makes more sense to carry something that you can depend on. I personally hate Glocks, but if my life was in danger I think I'd rather trust a Glock.


That's my 2 cents worth... of course I could be wrong.

A lot depends on how many shots you think it will take to do the job If only one, jams will not be a problem. More than one and you need a twelve gauge. I carry a 45 colt revolver for serious stuff. I have owned a number of autos and none was "jam free" and it seemed the most reliable were the "loosest" and the least accurate.

How about the P-38 ?
 

In an earlier string, a number of members expressed a preference for the P-38 when compared to the Luger for self defense. How would members rate the P-38 against modern guns?

My thoughts on this are... I would feel less comfortable carrying a cocked P.38 with the safety on, than a SIG P232 that was decocked. But if we were just comparing P.38 to Luger, the P.38 would win. It is inheirantly more reliable.

For a gun that has been thoroughly checked out, I rate it right up there with modern guns. I always carry a back up, which is usually a PPK. At present I am carrying more serious ordinance, an H&K 45 Compact and a S&W 357 Magnum. Either will do the job in spades!! I have been known to carry a P.38 as the primary, just can't endorse it enough! I think this design was ahead of its time. ~Thor~

The P38 is as modern as the Colt 1911, but for serious social occasions I still prefer my enhanced Officers mdl 45

The Luger was developed in the early 1900s, the P-38 was developed in the mid 1930s. Both weapons were improved over their production history, but they do not equal the performance of the modern automatic pistols. Like most other tools, technology improves them as time goes on. Just think on how guns have changed since the first flint locks.

My choise for a carry gun would be a glock or a S&W revolver if i was allowed to carry.

But I do deffinitely trust my Luger.

I have shoot a lot PPC with it without any problems and its a very dependable gun.


I wouldent feel unarmed or disabled in a gunfight with my shootingLuger.


Bigest problems with all lugers are in my opinion not magazines or ammo, but previus owners experimenting with triggerpulls and low preasure ammo.

I have the upmost confidence in my luger. It has been jamfree since I owned it (over 800 rounds to date) the problem here is what if you do have to use it? have you ever seen what the law does to guns put into "evidence"?

Its not pretty. When you get your priose back it won't be worth much. I would'nt submit even a shooter to this treadment. For this reasno among others my defence guns are off the shelf guns mostly revolvers(personal choice) with minumal gunsmithing(action jobs) and that I can have a duplicate of and have another made on short notice. Defence guns are tools. I prefer craftmans for work and faberge for play.

The P.38 is a modern gun. The current sidearm of the US Army is nothing more than a P.38 with a double stack magazine.

According to the 1999-2000 edition of Janeâ??s â??Infantry Weaponsâ?� the P1 is still in use in Germany, Chile, Norway, Portugal, and other (unnamed) countries.

the p-38 is a good dbl. action defence pistol.i have both Lugers and P-38's. BUT! if my life were on the line my 1943 Ithaca .45acp would be the one I'd want in my hand. just a thought.

Truth be told, if my life were on the line I wouldnâ??t want any kind of a pistol. A shotgun is more to the point. In the words of my grandfather, â??I only carry a pistol when Iâ??m not expecting trouble. If I expect trouble I donâ??t go.â?�

According to a fellow gun collector at work, he stated that Turkish forces carry their own copy of the p-38, except that they never bothered to get a license from Walther to produce them!
