Mauser Rework? UPDATED with pics
 

This reblued piece has been sitting in a local shop for 9 months that I know of with a $795 price tag on it, didnt pay much attention to it till today when I noticed the price is now $495 and decided to take a hard look at it.

I think this is a rework, no manufacturer markings on the toggle or chamber

No Import marks, I think it had 3 maybe 4 proofs on the right side but don't remember what they were.

Numbers - Matching except the toggle pin which is a new replacement and the extractor, the extractor was not replaced by this guy though so not sure if it is new production, did they have non numbered parts for reworks?

Mag - non matching with wood bottom

Hot salt dipped blued which was done when he received it as there was not much finish left on it, so the reblued finish is 100% and was not buffed. Some small areas of pitting on the frame above the grips on both sides and just under the tops of the grips.

Grips- very good condition dark brown almost black appearance. No chips but worn spots near the bottom by the screws. The right grip has a little wiggle in it at the top, is that a problem?. No markings

No pitting in the bore and strong lands and grooves, almost looks new. Were reworks rebarreled and then renumbered to match along with other parts?

Unit marking on the front strap L.A1.353, any ideas on Unit ID?

Was test fired after toggle pin repair and not fired since. I been doing business with this guy for 30 years so if it doesnt function well he will take it back or fix it my call.

$400 OTD cash deal I think this is gonna make me a nice shooter what do you all think?

Did you steal this for $400? You can't find them that cheap anywhere except Hugh's house :D


Does it or did it have a sear safety? The markings sounds like a unit police marking to me...

LOL maybe it is one of Hugh's. Yes I will followup with pics in a week or 2 when I conclude the deal, not sure on the sear saftey will check in to it when it arrives.

I finally got this home, the unit mark looks like L.AI.353. any ideas on the district or police unit?

I havent taken it to the range yet but with snap caps there is a small problem with the wood mag. After the last round it holds open but won't let me chamber a round with a reload unless I bring it back into battery w/o the mag then put the mag back in and chamber a round.

However the wood mag will work correctly in my 1939 and the 1939 works ok with the this guy, I don't get it.

Any ideas?

The Luger marked L.Al. is a great acquisition! For my database, could you confirm the serial numerals are 3394 and tell me the letter suffix below the numbers on the front of the frame?

Don that's 3354 and the letter U on the front frame. Why is that unit mark a great find? Do you know what the unit was?

Thanks for the correction and suffix. As Ed said above, this pistol was issued to the Landj�¤gerei (rural constabulary) in the Prussian governmental district of Allenstein in the province of East Prussia. This was part of a general rearming of the Landj�¤gerei with Lugers that occurred in 1929. Although the Allenstein Landj�¤gerei contingent was relatively large (390 men), this district was very deep within the territory that was overrun by the Russians at the end of WWII and few of the police weapons have made it into western collectors' hands. I have only four examples, including yours, of L.Al. markings in my database.

Pat the proofs look like #36, 37 and 38 from page 41 of Lugers at Random for the Mauser reworks.

Is there anyway to date the serial number now after it was reworked?

Two of the acceptances look like E/WaA66 and E/H. These both are very consistent with the other Lugers manufactured by BKIW in 1929 and delivered to the Landj�¤gerei. I am not expert in this area but I don't see anything indicating rework by Mauser.

Don that is correct on the markings but Lugers at Random states E/H for Mauser reworks and E/waA66 for Mauser and Simson reworks for 1930-1933 which would be in line with Pat's 1930 date. Is the book incorrect?

What is BKIW?

Pat the guy doing the unit marks built up some muscle mass by the time he got to mine 352 pieces later that's why mine are deeper :)
