Storage
What do you folks believe is the best manner to store Lugers in a safety deposit box at a bank? Years ago, a friend of mine merely wrapped his Lugers in old newspapers and then stuck them in the box, no other preparation and the guns didn't seem to suffer.

Re: Storage
I would be very nervous storing metal stuff in a safe deposit box. Many banks spray the interior of the vault with hydrogen sulfide gas as a fumigating agent. Although I don't know how hydrogen sulfide reacts with steel, I have seen it really screw up silver coins stored in a bank vault. I suppose you could put the guns in a totally airtight container in the box, but that creates its own problems if there is any trapped moisture.

Thanks Mike...I hadn't considered that possibility.

Re: Storage
Show and tell should really be fun down at the bank.

Re: Storage
H2S Is a DEADLY gas. A single whiff will drop you dead in your tracks.
I cannot believe that Hydrogen Sulfide is used for ANY purpose. I live out among oil wells where H2S is a byproduct. It regularly kills oilfield workers out in the open air. Gas sensors warn you in areas where H2S is present, because by the time you smell it, it's too late for you. Mike |

Johnny,
Not to mention the entertainment that the evenings security tape could provide. |
Re: Storage in a bank
Due to Swedish laws and regualations I was forced to store my little collection in a Bank betwen years 1994-2000.
This was cause they require all owners with more than 20 guns to have a bankvaultclassified storage. So at the time I was living in a apartment and not was able to have that high storage and just had a safetycabinet ( for my active hunting and shooting guns)in my home the collection guns was at the bank. Here is hopefully a pic of the guns in the bank. I never had any rustproblems but I always had a cloth with oil that I oiled all gunparts tuoched by hands. The bank was fully informed of my collection and did not mind me having them there, the cost for this was 280 USD per year. Regards HÃ?Â¥kan http://www.vapensmedjan.com |

Storage in a bank is insanity!
You have absolutely no control over what some idiot will store in the box next to yours! Poisons, explosives, dangerous chemicals, wood worms, decomposing organic matter, and anything you can imagine could be residing inches from your precious firearms. As if that isn't bad enough, should the box holder die, the moment the bank finds out about it access is frozen until IRS is there to witness the opening. Do you really want feds messing with your stuff? No, not for me. Better to rent a walk-in storage room and stock it with a state-of-the-art fire resistant safe!

Re: Storage in a bank is insanity!
Now I have a 2,7 ton heavy Safe that a Bank used to have before.
But for me as a collector before i bought my own house the bank was my only possibility. You are lucky to not have the extreme laws that we have here. Regards HÃ?Â¥kan |
The Allen Company Pistol Pouches
At the moment, I live in an apartment and I cannot keep my collection at home as a result of inadequate security and storage measures and, therefore, I keep all my pieces in a safe deposit box. Yes, it is painful not to pamper by pistols, but I have no other choice.
The method I have use to protect my items in a safe deposit box is to properly wipe the the metal with RIG grease using a RIG rag and place the pistol in a pistol pouch made by The Allen Company which is lined with padded wool similar to a RIG Rag - I never had any rust or humidity problems and I have had pistols stored for over 10 years. I strongly advise against placing the the pistol in a plastic ziplock bag or wrapping the pistol in plastic because it gives no protection against hits and bumps by other pistols in the safe deposit box. I hope that my adivise is helpful for the protection and preservation of your rare pistols. http://imperialarms.home.att.net |
Re: The Allen Company Pistol Pouches
Albert,
You have the best protection there is by using RIG and the pistol pouch. Since you have had no problems this is the answer. One suggestion to add is to make sure there is NO moisture in the pouch before storing the pistol that could effect the steel. Another item which I added is to wrap the pistol in acid free paper before putting into the pouch, but you have the right combination for proper storage. Marvin |
