Shoulder Stocks
 

I have just had an email exchange with a non-forum member who claims that the latest (June 06) issue of Guns & Ammo magazine has an article about the use of shoulder stocks.

He claims The ATF website has had no such notice about a change regarding shoulder stocks...

Is there somebody out there in cyberspace on this forum who is knowledgeable about the status of C&R guns and the National Firearms Act of 1934 that has this magazine and can provide some enlightenment, or at least scan the appropriate portion of this article and post it here for evaluation and discussion. I think this person is seriously mistaken about the legality of the use of shoulder stocks.

He has a stock/holster combination on ebay where his auction states that the stock can be used with ANY Luger that was manufactured with a stock lug... Before a forum member commits a felony, it would be beneficial if we talk this out...

The only gun magazine I still receive is the American Rifleman...

Yeah Ed, I got that much from their website too, but I really want to know what they mentioned about a change in legality of shoulder stocks...

I'll Quote from the pertinent paragraph of the magazine.

" A word of caution: For many years shoulder-stocked cartridge guns were a federal no-no without a special license. In recent times this proscription has been relaxed for guns qualifying as curios and relics, but if you buy a modern handgun with a barrel length of less than 16 inches and hook a stock to it, you are looking for trouble. Before you do any stocked- handgun collecting or firing, be sure to check out federal, state and local laws first"

I think if the author had said "relaxed for some guns ............." It would have been less likely to confuse the general public. However, the last sentence acts as the CYA for the article.

I think the guy you're having an e-mail exchange with is heading for trouble if he cites the article as backup to what he says.

Hi John, I am a C&R licensed collector and have been receiving regular info and updates from the BATF. I have NOT seen any statements regarding the change in ATF rules that have been suggested here. As far as I know the rules remain, Navy Luger- Navy stock, Arty Luger - Arty stock. I will read the rules more closely and will inform the forum if anything changes.

I haven't read the article in "Guns & Ammo", but if the author implies that there have been recent changes to allow QD stocks on any C&R pistol with a stock lug, he is sadly mistaken.

Out of curiosity, I took this issue up with TECH BRANCH to confirm.

I am also a licensed C&R collector and agree with Champ7fc's assessment. This guy doesn't know what he is talking about... I finally read the article in an airport newstand day before yesterday... it doesn't imply what the guy said... it is very vague... another reason why I haven't subscribed to a gun magazine except the american rifleman in over 20 years... too many "experts" author their articles...
