aluminium ww2 magazine questions
 

gentleman, i am in search of knoweldge and searching can be dangeriuos and expensive, i am " attempting" to remove this two varables. I say attempting.


1) are all aluminium ww2 magazine numbered


2) how do i tell a repro aluminium ww2 magazine compared to an orginal .


3) whats a far price for an orginal.

The aluminium mag bottoms started appearing around 1924-1928 or so. There were several different types of mag bodies, makers, markings and bottoms. They were not all marked. In addition, since aluminium is easy to "work" many originals have been buffed, re-numbered and re-proofed, and by this I mean postwar. Several other countries, including East-Germany have made mags for their military and police as well as re-marked WWII mags, so it can get confusing. IMO the best way to know original WWII era mags is to handle the originals and second is to examine the major references.

A good book to start the learning process on Lugers would be "Lugers at Random" By Charles Kenyon.

Rob,

There are a lot of different variations in magazines for WWII. There are commercial and military magazines. The best was to learn about magazines is to buy some books and study what magazines are pictured and then go to every gun-show in your area, or pawn shops, or fellow collectors, and look, hold, and study the body and bases. Your going to have to have someone show you the different variations and what to look for as far as serial numbers, size, proofs, body types, and how they are pinned. This can be learned and only takes time and some experience. The magazines are one of the most important parts of the gun, as a matching magazine will greatly increase the price, and two matching magazines will usually double the price, so -- you guessed it, they are one of the first things to me messed with.
