Need Identification Help
Hello all, I am brand new here. I have inherited a Luger and know absolutely nothing about it. I have read a few threads on here and I know I am in the right place to find some information. These are the only photos I have on this computer, if you need any additional photos please let me know.

Yes, many more pictures or lots of info.
A. It's a LP08 which is commonly called an artillery Luger B. grips had items added, not by a German gi C. What is year on top D. What is serial number to include suffix E. what is on the toggle, DWM or Erfurt |
Welcome to the forum. Larger photos would help also. The ones you posted are way to small.

Top of the gun, the part you pull up to make the action open. The top should have letters on it and it should be stylized DWM...

Hi Paul, and welcome to the forum.
The pictures that you are posting don't have enough detail in them. Typically, you should size a photo with at least 1024 pixels of detail along the wide or tall axis. We need to see the top of your Luger, and photos of all the markings externally visible. You need to check to see if the numbered internal parts match the serial number. Please ensure that your Luger is unloaded before handing it, and also photograph your empty magazine, including any markings on the base. I'd also like to see the detail of the inlay that is on each grip... It's quite unusual. When you take additional photos, use a tripod, and take them in indirect (shaded) sunlight without a flash. Use the closeup setting on your digital camera. Marc |
Thanks Marc, I will refresh the thread when I get back in town and take more photos. Here is a closeup of the inlay.

What the heck? Interesting modification to the handle on both sides ...You say inherited? Does it come with Vet bring back papers? Anything is possible so..I will wait and see what the rest say...
|
Although slathered in grease, the gun looks refinished, based on the soft lines, (lack of crisp edges) and dished out proofs.
I have never seen this particular Nazi eagle and swastika symbol before. It is not official, to the best of my knowledge and must have been a civilian produced piece of jewelry or similar, which was appropriated by a GI and inlaid into the grips. |
True, anything is possible. But it's sure not a factory modification, nor a government contractor modification. If it's modified by a well known historical figure or involved in important historical event with provenance, that will attract history collectors.... or, if it's the instance used in a recent famous movie , that will attract some collectors.

Is that part of it's holster I see in the bottom photo?
|
It sure looks like a holster.
The owner should post everything they received so a true valuation can be made. |
I will post a ton of pics tomorrow when I get back into town. Yes that is a holster.
|
Ok all,
Here are some additional photos of the artillery Luger and as an added bonus I have some pictures of another Luger. As always, any information is greatly appreciated. I have only one magazine and I believe it is for the standard one. There may still be more in Grandpa's safe, will have to check. As far as I can tell, all external parts are numbers matching. I will have to get someone to take it apart to confirm the inner parts. |
Wunderbar!

I think you have a couple of nice Lugers. An Erfurt P08 and a DWM LP08.
The lack of detail and lighting makes it very difficult to judge their finish or markings. Sharp focus, well lit, with more resolution will help. Go to a digital camera and tripod if you're using a cellphone camera. |
Thank you mrerick. I will bust out the digital camera and replace these pictures with some better ones. One question: Any ideas on the large ink stamp on the holster?
|
OK, let's try the artillery model now.

The short Erfurt looks great. The finish is original, and even the magazine's matching!
The long one was refurbished. |
Great pics
|
I've never seen that large a format ink stamping in a holster before.
|
Alanint does the stamp tell you anything? There is a smaller marking that is so faint it doesn't come through in photos well. I can make out 1915 and Berlin but the word above Berlin is very hard to see. Thanks for all the information everyone.

Can anyone help put a value on these for me?
|
OK, I'll take a whack at it.
The artillery is $1200 on a good day, if it shoots good - it's a heavily buffed and poorly refinished shooter. You might get a little more from someone who wants the strange nazi grip panels. The holster is worn and is missing parts - maybe $150-200? I don't know artillery holsters so I can't say if it is original or not, but the belt loop(s) look wrong to me. The Erfurt is $1400-1600. It's original but has a lot of rust. The matching mag helps the value considerably, but overall it's barely collector quality. You will get the most from someone who wants an old "warhorse". - Geo |
I would generally agree with these price estimates.
Note: The "belt loops" on the Artillery holster are correct, as Artillery holsters did not have belt loops, but shoulder strap loops on which they were hung for carry. |
Thank you gentlemen, that gives me a good idea of value. I will let you know what they end up selling for.
|
Thanks for good photos! Could you remove grips wery carefully and post pics of them inside?
Regards Kai Norway |
Kai I will try to get them off.
|
I bought the pair from my co-worker as l am a C&R licensed collector and I always wanted a luger.
Took off the grips and found matching numbers . Replaced the safety lever pin on the artillery ( flopped around). Thinking about having it refinished, and leaving the Erfurt as is. |
The holster stamp is " M.HERMANN NURNBERG 1917"
