I've been trying to get at least one of each basic type of Luger and the Police was high on the list. I hope this one is worth the having... I figure that eight bills ain't too bad of a deal on any Luger, even a rearsenaled Police... ;)

It comes with two commercial, wood bottomed mags, those alone should be worth a couple of hundred bucks.

Ha, ha! I always do this... try to rationalize impulse buys. This is why I never tell my girlfriend about guns I've bought. She has no idea how many are even in the vault anymore. Adding them, one at a time. :roflmao:

I have a newbe question. I don't see any strawing on this Lugar. Does that mean that it has been reblued?

Yes, Dave. Police issue guns are ones that have been arsenal refurbed, fitted with a safety sear, renumbered, etc... and issued to German police.

As far as I know, all Police Lugers have been reblued, etc...

Original pre 1945 police Lugers we not all arsenal refinished, not by a long shot...and of those that were, the straw parts were not blued....DDR gun would not be so treated and of course we dip blued small straw parts and all.....DaveL please be careful and ask lots of questions before you buy.

Steve, it is a common misonception. Police lugers came from many sources;

1. Imperial lugers, sometimes they were completely refurbished, sometimes not
2. DWM New manufacture in the 1920's (probably 1919-1921) and then late 1920's
3. New simson manufacture, some in the mid 1920's, many more early 1933-34 timeframe
4. Mauser made police guns late 1930's on...
5. A small number of kreighoffs were made into police with sear safetys
6. Then they recieved sear and sometimes mag safety's 1932 with mag safetys coming off in the late 1930's

When they went in for sear safety and / or when they went for magazine safety removal, they had a large hole that had to be fixed (but not always), so they could ahve been refurbished then. Also, if a gun needed to be refurbished, they would be (i.e. normal wear and tear...)

Here is an intersting read I just came across. It's a summary of the Weimar police experience. The work references firearms for the police... "Nor was there money for modernization, such as buying new forensic equipment or firearms." Interesting article, but I'll let Ed comment on its accuracy:

Sounds right ;) there is a book, The Berlin Police Force In The Weimar Republic, by Liang, Hsi-huey, it is a bit dry and harder to read, one of the few books on Weimar Police. I need to read it again.

I'm trying to behave. Everything is going well (thanks for asking). I'm getting in shape for Louisville, I'm going to the P38 conference. I don't get away too often, but I hear the SOS is well worth the trip. This will be my first major show. As long as I can get off the ground in Feb... I'll be there.

Start reading about the Weimar Era in Germany. Everyone seems to think it was just kind of a laid back, ho-hum, period. It was actually the opposite.

Freikorps (independently led Militarist groups) were having running gun battles with the Police and the Army. The Army was in-turn having gun battles with the Police. Different Police factions were even shooting at each other.

The Anarchists and Communists were shooting it out with everybody. There was an average of 20-30 political assassinations per month. And the whole time this was going on the Army and Landj�¤gerei (State police) were on the Eastern Frontier trying to keep the Czechs and Poles from overrunning the country.

It was a real Wild West Show until they started getting things under control in the mid to late 20s.

This is the best book that I have found on the Weimar era. It's long out of print, but turns up on eBay and the on-line book sites now and then.

The Weimar period was in deed a fascinating time. I've always been interested in military history and I have a pretty good grip on WW2. When I started acquiring Imperial Lugers and also one 1920 police I had to look into German military and political history from those periods as well. I've also visited the city of Weimar on several occasions, a beautiful and interesting place.

Last Saturday I acquired a crate of old books from an estate, including a signed(!) copy of Franz von Papens memoirs. Highly interesting and recommended reading, he covers the 20th century from start to the late 1940's.
