Glenn,
I've not seen original grips with the SN stamped more than once, but these do look old and original. Where did you get the letter suffix picture? I would like to have it, but the way it is posted I cannot save a copy of it. Thanks - Geo |
Hi George, I have no doubt as to the grips being original, perhaps the person doing the stamping just got loopy that day.
As for the letter suffix picture you should be able to right click on the image and then click "Save image as..." from the menu. I had done a Google image search and came across it; its source is from a gunboards.com thread at this link. http://luger.gunboards.com/showthrea...ton-Washington) |

Alright, I broke down the gun again and was taking another look at things and noticed the part located near bottom center of 1st pic. Is that a number or a marking? I thought it looks like a 55 but then the loops look strange to me going full circle. If it a number then I suppose it’s another mismatch. Could someone also educate me as to what the proper name for this part is as well, being new to this I have no idea.

Sure, Glenn, this part is called the "holdopen", which, when the last round is gone from the mag, is pushed up by the mag's follower button in its top position. When this occurs, the wedge-shaped portion on the back end of the part engages the underside of the breech block, holding the action in the open position until the empty mag is removed and the toggle knobs are drawn back and released, with either no mag or a loaded mag, and the action will return to battery. It's one of the numbered parts, and should have the last two digits of the Serial# stamped on it.

Thanks for the info David.
Was I correct in my thinking then that this is a “55” despite the look of the loops? The last two digits of the guns Serial # is 85; up to now I thought the rear toggle link was the only mismatch until I noticed this. Will add this to my “to find” list in the hopes eventually locating one with a matching number and will hope to not come across any other surprises. Any suggestions on sources to check for parts (other than posting in the WTB thread here) it would be greatly appreciated. |
Looks like 55 to me. Try Lugerdoc on this forum. He has a lot of parts, honest and good to deal with. Bill

Thank you Bill for your input and recommendation.
I feel pretty certain that it’s a 55 as well, I just haven’t seen any other number 5 stamps have the circle loop all the way back on itself; although being the fledgling I am with these I’m really in no position to judge. The only previous mismatch I had was the rear toggle link and Lugerdoc had posted that he had none matching mine currently in stock; but I figure I’m in no hurry and the mismatches in no way detract from the pleasure I get every time I hold the gun. |
That's what it's all about. Just enjoy!!!!!! Bill
