You all should get together and publish a 'Luger Encyclopedia'

Don -
Yes, I made a mistake when I typed the year of the first order. Thank you for noting my error. I went back and corrected that. In his notes, August Weiss states "In DWM Berlin Wittenan after WWI (around 1927 - 1928), we made a few thousand Parabellum pistols having no DWM markings; destined for the so called Riff tribe in Morocco. These could not be delivered; (DWM's CEO) Baron von Gontard and/or the government thought this was too risky. These pistols were later taken over by the police in Berlin." (Document 26 - 1972) I may be wrong; however, the number mentioned by Gortz/Sturgess is something well over 20,000 Parabellums. (I am currently traveling and do not have access to the Gortz/Sturgess set of books, although I will by Monday, hopefully) I wonder if there might have been two runs of these unmarked "Sneak" Lugers; i.e., one for the Riff Tribe, and one which was intended from the beginning to be for the Prussian police? Just a thought........ |

Yes, it does seem odd that Weiss never mentioned it.
Weiss was at DWM in 1929 and did not go to Mauser until 1930. Still reports these pistols were made in 1929 and 1930. So perhaps Weiss was not there when this project ("sneak" Lugers) started. ("Weimar And Early Nazi Lugers", Still, page 7) Another thing that makes me wonder concerns Weiss's comment that "a few thousand" of these were made for the Riff Contract. If these pistols show up in the "s"; "t" and "u" serial range, you could in theory be talking about number up to 30,000 Lugers. |
But you find the r, s and t with DWM stamped on them.
I can not understand why they would be making army & police with and without the DWM stamp at the same time and still be trying to sneak anything. Ed |
I don't understand it either.

I have researched this a bit further and have started a new thread to continue this discussion - http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthre...023#post189023.
