OK, let an Imperial era guy wade in here. As far as "common" goes it is fairly close - approximately 123,000 byf 42 made (including those sold to Portugual and Bulgaria) vs. approximately 140,000 1916 DWM production. Looking at asking prices, the values are almost even as well. Considering the nearly 3 decades difference in production and two wars, I would think it would be much more difficult to find a 1916 in excellent condition than it would be to find a 1942 excellent example. Lastly, you know my preference...if it was made after 1918, it is a reproduction!
