The only dumb question is one you want to ask and don't.
Jan Still's "Third Reich Lugers" estimates that 20% of 41 and 42 byf Lugers were issued with black grips, the remainder are wood. 41 byf's in n and o range were issued with aluminum bottom mags and the rest were issued with black plastic bottoms. 42 byf's were issued with black plastic bottoms and rarely with an aluminum bottom. Based on the percentages I would say that black plastic would be correct unless you have a 41 byf in the n or o range then aluminum would be correct.
