Stainless Luger History

I hate to put a bee in any bodies bonnet, But I have to agree with Spuhr on this one. Shortly after buying my first luger, which was a 1917 artillery, I started reading about WW1 and how and why it started. I began to understand the reason it started. I now have two excellent books on audio tapes on the subject that I listen to while deer hunting. I now have great appreciation for that war. That is probably the reason I specialize in the Imperial era lugers.

I recently bought a 1906 Swiss 'Cross in Shield' luger that I fell in love with before buying and I noticed that, while the gun was in excellent condition, I did not have the same feelings for it that I would have have for a navy or artillery in the same condition.

I think that is why although I have a full set of artilleries, through and including a mint 1920, I have never bought or been interested in the Persian artillery. Maybe I am showing that I am a purist but its my feelings.

Also, I have talked to other collectors who are much more into metal machining than I am. They thought that the metal work on the Stainless Steel lugers was not that good. If someone wants to debate with me on that one I will have to give in. I am not a metal worker. That was just the word that I got from other collectors who I feel do know what they are talking about. I have assumed that this is the reason that these guns never sold very well.

Personally, I had looked at the 6 inch Stainless Steel and I did not like the military style rear sight. But I will concede that I don't care much for military sights anyway. I noticed the sights on Spuhr's competitive gun and I thought that it was much better. (Beautiful gun, Spuhr) But I was trained on an American deer rifle sight so I feel most comfortable with the bubble front sight and the notched rear sight.

If I was to put money in a non-authentic, altered luger I would much more want to put my money on Spuhr's competitive gun that on the Stainless Steel luger. I have to admit that I am a purist but I have to admit too that I liked Spuhr's gun.
