If you are concerned about a possible crack in metal, there are a lot of ways to discern such. A net search engine will show a lot of hits on the subject.

Two of the more simplistic are the dye and magnetic methods used in various industries. Dye can come in a spray can fwiw.

If you know a local engine builder, he might have a magnfluxing type unit.
