Looking for technical info of a MP40

Can a permit for it be obtained or could it be deactivated? Here in the U.S., your only options would be to turn it in, cut up the receiver and keep the parts, or donate it to a museum, although there is some paperwork involved with the latter option that I an not familiar with.
