Post 1917/1920 DWM reworked artilliary.

I replied to a question in the P08 military forum and Mr. Tinker suggested I start a new topic so here it is...

My Luger is a 1917 DWM, double dated 1920. The original police markings are: "S.L.Pol." and this is x'd out. It also has the mark: "S.P. L."

I apologize for the picture quality. That's the best I could do. In the pics the grips and mag are after-market. The mag that came with the gun was an aluminum base with waffenampt and the original grips were well-worn walnut. Both were put aside for safe-keeping.

Regardless to what I said originally, it DOES have a sear safety (I just did some research and learned a bit about that...lol).

I bought it about 5 years ago from a small local dealer who was selling off his personal collection. He said it was a WWII vet bringback but I have no proof of the provenance.

Any comments would be appreciated. TIA

Hey, this is interesting, see this;
http://forums.lugerforum.com/lugerfo...c;f=2;t=001044 Carl from PA has this one, and it is marked S.P.L. !!

Cool, yes it is a police weimar luger, right up my alley. Let me look closer, than will add more of my 2 cents!

Peat,

I am developing a database of Weimar police unit marks and so far have a number of similar marks recorded. Several have an earlier mark "S.L.Pol." x'd out like yours. They have been identified as Schutzpolizei in the state (not Prussian Province) of Sachsen (Saxony).

S.P./C. - 1 (Chemnitz)
S.P./D. - 5 (Dresden)
S.P./L. - 7 (Leipzig)
S.P./M. - 1 (MeiÃ??en)
S.P./Zw. - 3 (Zwickau)

I would very much appreciate knowing the serial number (w/ suffix) of your Luger or at least the first few digits. Thanks very much.

Marked like the one shown above, grip markings are "S. L. P.o1. 3927" all X'ed out and "S.P.L." on the round down of the grip, as above...and it is interesting that the"...P.o1" is a small "o" after "P."..is is a different font and size then any other letter or number on the gun...the gun is a DWM 1917/1920 with the #2 matching mag...and of course police sear safety, with several lazy C/N proof marks, SN# 9959 l. Hope this helps,

Thanks to all for the info to add to the database. I have found several variations of the mark "S.L.Pol." and plan to post some information on them in the future.

Howard, does yours really have the number "1" in the mark or is it the letter "l"? I'd be quite surprised if it is a number. The extra period seems to be just one more variation on the theme. If you would post a photo of your grip strap mark, I would appreciate it.

Don....picky....picky....picky, OK, under greater magnification it reads S.L.Po1...the X's are very deep and cover much of the marking, but the "1-L" in question, most assuredly has bottom "legs" or equal length going in each direction left and right, while the top of the letter/number in question is heavy X'ed out, the top part looks like it has a right hand side point to it and sloping downward to the left, looks like it was a "1" to me, our camera will, not give you the up close shot you want, but will see if Mrs. PoliceLuger will shot and post it when she gets home from work, nothing she like better after a hard day at work then to post Luger pictures...

Don/Ed....hope this picture gives you the info you wanted, you can see that the "1-L" in question looks like a #1, also you can see that is an E/F mag, matched to gun....let me know if I can help.

Howard,
Thank Mrs. Policeluger for me. She does good work.

I think its the letter "l" in a font like Times New Roman with a little flag on top. It's identical to several others.

Thanks very much for the info. I now have two more to add to this category. I think they will make for an interesting post soon.

Just my $0.02, but I think the letter in question is not a "1", but a lower case "l". If you look at the 2 letters I just typed, the "one" has a downward slope to the tail (just like the 1 on the mag, while the "ell" has a straight tail. I realize that my pic is not too clear, but my X does not completely obliterate the top of the letter.

Also, another observation - several of the "S.L.Pol." specimens I have seen here have a serial number suffix, but mine has no number. Is there any significance to that?

Jim,

Some do, some don't. Some are canceled, some are not. I haven't figured it out.

It all depends on where and when they received their guns.

You sometimes see sear safety guns with a mag safety (or remnants of one), but I have never seen a mag safety with out a sear safety. Point is, that it all depends on when the gun came into service and when it left. Since to an armory a luger is a luger, then they didn't care the year, serail number etc. Same with US 1911A1's, you could see a 1911 issued in say vietnam, not as likely but if sent from a unit, still possible if it was in storage...
