wouldn't the total removal of enamel in the gesichert be a sign of a re-do, as well?

White safety paint being missing is a sign of rework on the gun. But not definitive! The paint is removed and replaced easily. Advanced collectors use the paint as a clue but not as a defining characteristic.

Agreed, simple handling and use can cause the paint to fall off.
